Forgiveness and Reconciliation 

What forgiveness IS:

1. Choice

2. Sacrifice

3. Trust

(Romans 12:19) Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written, “it’s mine to avenge, I will repay” says the Lord

4. Gift

(Luke 17:3) Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him, and if he repents, then forgive him.

What forgiveness is NOT:

1. Excuse

2. Befriend

(Romans 12:20-21) on the contrary, if your enemy is hungry feed him. If he is thirsty give him something to drink. In doing this you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.

3. Abuse

4. Forget

(Hebrews 8:12) I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more.

(Matthew 6:14-15) “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Luke 5:4-11 (NIV)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
1.) Stop, look and listen

2.) Eliminate distractions

(Psalm 23:1-3) The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. (2) He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters, (3) he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

The shepherd 

-leads 

-feeds 

-protects 

-It’s the shepherd’s voice – (not a strangers voice) about relationship, food, guidance, protection.

 

1.It’s ‘the good shepherd’s voice’ 

(It brings only good – John 10:10)

(John 10:10) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

 

2.It’s a personal voice

3.It’s a voice within 

a.-Children hear it (Samuel) 

(1 Samuel 3:8) A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.

b.-Kings hear it (Cyrus)

(2 Chronicles 36:22-23) In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing: (23) “This is what Cyrus king of Persia says:“‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Any of his people among you may go up, and may the Lord their God be with them.’”

c.-Non-christians can hear it – (Abraham) 

(Genesis 12:1) The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

-Parable of the sower

(Luke 8:5-8) “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. (6) Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. (7) Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. (8) Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

 

d.-Runaway christians hear it 

(1 Kings 19:9,12) There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (12) After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

 

e.Christians continually hear it 

-The Holy Spirit – speaks, teachers ,corrects, brings truth. 

(John 14:26) But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

How?

The friend of Faith (and the enemy of Faith)

(Hebrews 11:1 NLT) Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.

(Hebrews 11:1b The Message) It’s our handle on what we can’t see.

1.The friend of faith: Speak what God says
(Mark 11:22-24) “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. (23) “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. (24) Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(Isaiah 55:10-12) As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, (11) so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (12) You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

2.The enemy of faith: Speaking through a heart of unforgiveness
(Mark 11:25) And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

(Isaiah 55:13) Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.

The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing. Jonah 1:1-17 ‭‭NIV

 But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”

“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”

Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased.”
Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.

God is able

Joseph –

(Genesis 37:1-5) Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan. (2) This is the account of Jacob’s family line. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them. (3) Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. Promise to the Sons and Daughters

(Acts 2:17) In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

(Psalm 110:3 NKJV) Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth.

-People shall be volunteers (congregation – willing, spontaneous, abundant gift)

-In the day of your power. (strength, virtue)

-In the beauties of holiness, (magnificence, splendour)

-From the womb of the morning (from the morning onwards).

-You have the dew of your youth. (youth – of boyhood, of girlhood).

Imagine God’s Good Plans: 

(Jeremiah 29:11) For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

1.“I know the plans I have for you …

” Yada: Ginosko – that close type of knowing, touching, seeing, tasting, experiencing.

“There are only 2 ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is a miracle.” Einstein

2.Plans for peace – ‘shalom’. good health, prosperity, security. (and they were in babylon)

3.Plans for hope – expected end. So what do we do?

(Jeremiah 29:12-14a) Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. (13) You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (14) I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”

2.Trust Him, Seek Him. 

(Proverb 3:5-6) Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

3.Get a God-given plan. 

(Proverb 29:18)Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdomʼs instruction.

4.Take small steps towards it now. 

(Zechariah 4:10a NLT) Do not despise these small beginnings, for the lord rejoices to see the work begin,
